SA: Minister warns about buying on credit at Xmas

ADELAIDE, Dec 20 AAP - The South Australian government has urged consumers to avoid
credit card spending sprees over the Christmas-New Year period.

Consumer Affairs Minister Rob Lawson said people should take care not to over commit
themselves financially.

"Many people fall into the trap of credit card overspending on gifts, other Christmas
expenses and new year sales," Mr Lawson said.

"There is no doubt the pressure of intensive advertising during December and early
January encourages many people to spend more than they can afford."

He said consumers should work out a budget and stick to it, and pay cash wherever possible.

"Even with the 'buy now, pay later' schemes, bills always arrive in due course and
many people discover they are unable to pay," Mr Lawson said.
