NSW: Councillors told discuss travel claims in public

Councillors in New South Wales will no longer be able to throw out the public whilediscussing their travel claims when new state government rules come into effect today.

Local Government Minister HARRY WOODS says the rules will make the state's 172 councilsmore accountable to their ratepayers.

He says councillors won't be able to have closed-door meetings when discussing theirown travel claims, including fees and expenses.

Mr WOODS says the changes are part of ongoing reforms to the Local Government Act.

Among other reforms, councils will be forced to hold a public hearing into any proposedchanges to community land.
